Five Things We Love About Japan!

This year we took our first trip to Japan, a land of exquisite beauty and ancient traditions. Its unique blend of rich culture, stunning landscapes, and technological marvels make it a must-visit destination. We’re excited to share the five things that made Japan an unforgettable experience for us:
- the kindness of the locals,
- the awe-inspiring temples and shrines,
- the delicious food,
- the diverse entertainment options, and
- the efficient marvel that is the bullet trains.
The people are incredibly polite, and respectful. As New Yorkers, Japan was both familiar, and refreshing at the same time. Japanese hospitality, known as “omotenashi,” is a genuine and heartwarming experience. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene countryside, locals are always ready with a warm smile and a helping hand, making us feel welcomed and cherished.

The temples and shrines in Japan are some of the most beautiful we’ve ever seen. Each one had an interesting story and had significant meaning to the people who visit. Walking through the torii gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha or marveling at the serenity of Kyoto’s Kinkaku-ji, one can’t help but be captivated by the spiritual aura that permeates these sacred sites.

One thing that we both agreed on was that the Japanese cuisine was amazing! Japanese food, or washoku, is a delightful blend of flavors, textures, and colors. From sushi and sashimi to ramen and tempura, every dish is a masterpiece crafted with meticulous care and attention to detail. One of our favorite foods was the Japanese curry. We even keep some at home and though it’s not as good as the curry there, it’s still very good. Food lovers find themselves on a gastronomic adventure, exploring the diverse culinary landscape that Japan offers.

Furthermore, Japan’s entertainment scene is as diverse as it is captivating. Sean was able to take a samurai lesson in Kyota and indulge in anime, manga, and video games. Japan caters to all tastes. Akihabara in Tokyo, where we stayed for the first few nights of our trip, is a haven for anime enthusiasts and gamers. There was electronics stores, gacha games, arcades, and even maid cafes.
Lastly, Japan’s technological prowess shines brightly through its efficient and speedy transportation system, epitomized by the iconic Shinkansen, or bullet trains. These marvels of engineering not only connect major cities but also offer travelers a comfortable and swift way to explore the country. The punctuality, safety, and speed of these trains exemplify Japan’s commitment to excellence and innovation.

Japan’s allure lies not only in its picturesque landscapes and historic sites but also in the kindness of its people, the spiritual sanctity of its temples and shrines, the tantalizing flavors of its cuisine, the diverse entertainment options, and the efficiency of its transportation system. Embracing these aspects of Japan enriches the soul and creates memories that last a lifetime. So, pack your bags and embark on a journey to this enchanting land, where every moment is a celebration of culture, warmth, and discovery.
