Our Unforgettable Experience Staying at a Ryokan in Kyoto

If you’re planning a trip to Japan, make sure to add Kyoto to your itinerary. It’s a beautiful city with a rich history and culture that offers visitors a unique and authentic experience. During our recent trip, we had the opportunity to stay at a ryokan, which is a traditional Japanese inn. In this post, we will share our personal experience of staying at a ryokan in Kyoto, from the traditional Japanese room to the onsen experience and kaiseki cuisine.
The Traditional Japanese Room
The traditional Japanese room, or “washitsu,” in a ryokan is a unique and authentic experience. The room is designed with tatami mats, low tables, and futons for sleeping, creating a calming and peaceful atmosphere. Before entering the room, visitors must remove their shoes and wear slippers provided by the ryokan. The room design is simple, yet elegant, with a Zaisu chair, a traditional Japanese chair without legs, and a low table (chabudai). Staying in a washitsu allows for a full immersion in Japanese culture.
Kaiseki Cuisine
The kaiseki cuisine is a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner served in the privacy of your own room. Each dish is beautifully presented and made with the freshest ingredients. It’s a feast for the senses and a great way to experience traditional Japanese cuisine. The ryokan’s chef masterfully prepares each dish, which includes seasonal ingredients and local specialties. The attention to detail and different flavors and textures of each course are exceptional. The dinner ends with a delicious dessert and green tea.
The Onsen Experience
While our ryokan didn’t have a traditional onsen we did take advantage of the bathtub in our room. However, onsens are natural hot springs found throughout Japan. Many ryokans have their own private onsen that you can use for free. Soaking in the hot water is an incredibly relaxing and a great way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The experience is rejuvenating and can leave you feeling refreshed. It’s important to note that the etiquette of using an onsen is to take a shower before getting in the hot water. The ryokan provides everything you need, including shampoo, soap, and towels.
Staying at a ryokan in Kyoto is an unforgettable experience that we highly recommend. The traditional Japanese room, onsen experience, and kaiseki cuisine are just a few of the highlights. The ryokan’s staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel at home. If you’re looking for an authentic Japanese experience, a stay at a ryokan in Kyoto is a must. Don’t forget to add it to your travel bucket list!
